E-publishing-Why it is time to write your book

"Everyone has a book in them, what's your story?"

This quote by the famous author Dorothy Dubel is truer today than it has ever been. If you are reading this article, you most likely are working as a writer for online publication. E-publishing, writing and selling books for digital download, is experiencing rapid growth.

Now is the time for you to think about writing and publishing your own e-book.

Like many of you, writing articles for these revenue share platforms gives me the opportunity to share my wisdom, expertise and passion with thousands of interested readers. I made a little money and had the opportunity to improve my skills as a researcher and writer. Make money for yourself instead of for clients and revenue share sites. Turn your ideas, experience and knowledge into an e-book and sell it.

Facts about e-publishing and why you should be doing it:

  • You have access to millions of potential buyers
  • E-books are less expensive to create and sell
  • More e-books were published this year than paper books
  • Writing successful e-books creates substantial residual income

The market is enormous and the potential for income from digital book sales is greater now than it has ever been. Your unique life experience and knowledge gives you the ability to answer questions and solve problems for literally millions of potential readers.

Write a report or how-to you guide using your life experience to provide helpful information that answers the question or solves a common problem. Submit it to e-publishers like Smashwords and the Kindle publishing platform for Amazon.com and with a little marketing effort you’ll soon begin receiving payment from the sale of your digital downloads.

E-publish with Kindle Direct Publishing

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing offers the most widely used e-publishing platform. It dominates the e-book market worldwide and is actively seeking new authors and great books. Some Indie authors only sell their books online through distributors like Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords.

Some indie authors are selling over 10,000 copies of their books each month at prices averaging from $2.99 to $9.99. With a 70% average profit on each book sold....well, you can do the math.

To learn more about publishing your book with Kindle Direct Publishing visit their site Getting Started page. There you will find the answers to all your questions about getting published. The neat thing about e-publishing with Kindle Direct Publishing is speed. If you are publishing from the U.S. you book can be available to prospective buyers in as little as 24 hours.

The video beside this text will walk you through the process for e-publishing with Kindle Direct Publishing. The whole process is fast and simple, you can submit a book in about 5 minutes. Again, the Kindle Direct Publishing video will show the process step-by-step.

E-publish with Smashwords

A Short List of E-publishers

Here are some of the online publishers that can publish, promote and sell your e-books. Some of them will not charge upfront fees to publish your book. Instead, they but will take a fixed percentage of every sale and pay the balance to you. The ones that don't charge upfront, like Smashwords, will expect you to format the book files yourself before submitting them.

Others will charge upfront fees to process the files and market your book. E-publishers like Xlibris make self publishing simple for the writer but charge you for the convenience. In many cases it is well worth the added expense because professional formatting experts, illustrators and marketers are assigned to your book with the goal of making it the best it can be.

This results in added value to you because professional marketing efforts, illustrations and cover art generate books that sell many more copies. More copies equals more earnings for the e-publisher and the writer.

  • Smashwords
  • Pubit!-by Barnes and Noble
  • Kindle Direct Publishing
  • Xlibris

There are more and some will specialize in a particular genre such as romance, fantasy or children's literature. Do your homework and study the site policies and requirements so that you fully understand what they require from you and more importantly what they are doing for your books success.

Good how-to guide on ebooks. I'm becoming educated on just how popular ebooks are. Apparently, some writers are breaking into the big time this way, even earning millions of dollars. I recently read a profile on some of these authors and I have to say, though I lament the demise of so many wonderful book stores, that information makes it tempting to give writing an ebook a go.

My publisher was Dog Ear in Indianapolis. Our 1st venture was a doozy. On Russell-D, you can read the weekly chapters and know what you've got ahead of you. I've just published my fifth book, The Cat Who Wanted To Be A Dog. #1 was Pop Pop's Magic Chair, then The Loch Lomond Monster, poems for 2 -5's, Before You Were 5 and for ages 6 -8, Before You Were 8. All are in Amazon & Barnes&Nobel E-Catalogs & our site www.booksbyallmeans.com. Now I can laugh. David Russell

Great hub, but I do not think self-publishing is the way I want to go...E book may be the answer though.

On my Russell-D site, you can relive with me my first book self published book, week by week through the travail. All 5 of my children's books are now in E-Catalogs at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, plus Apple I Books and my web site booksbyallmeans.com. By now the publisher and I have learned how to deal with each other. Like any business arrangement, you deal as you would like to be dealt. David Russell

Hi RVDaniels!

I find Your hub amazing! I've had an eBook app on the App Store for almost a month now, but it's not picking up well. That is why I am pursuing one to publish on smashwords. Thank you for the useful information.

Thanks RVDANIELS this hub on e-book publishing with Smashwords is very useful. My uncle has just published his first book, County Road Four, and he is not too optomistic about using his current publishing company again for his future book. Perhaps you will see his books on Smaswords in the future. Tanks again.
