National Check Day- America's New Holiday or a national disaster?
5550 million Americans are on Food Stamps-Happy Check Day!
Check Day-a new national holiday?
Aren't holidays wonderful? Holy days , independence and memorial days and just plain happy silly days like your birthday. I love them all but lately one new holiday has been warming my heart strings and tickling my funny bone.
Until recently this day was less well honored than it is now but each month brings another half million or so celebrants to the table . The really neat part of our new Holy Day is that it comes each week on Wednesday.
Oh, sometimes it's a day late if another hateful holiday happened that week but mostly it's on Wednesday that untold millions of us wait with baited breath for that harbinger of good things- the little white postal truck.
Yes, it's check day! Our faithful postal hero each week brings us his envelope full of government largess with which to pay exactly 6/10ths of what it costs to live. You might think that only living 6/10ths of the week might make me bitter. Far from it! For without this weekly don't-have-a-job check I would be living 0/10ths and to me 6 is the larger number.
And so it is with sober and somber gladness I happily await my rescuer today and think that worrisome question: how can he drive on the wrong side of the truck? His appearance soon will placate my hunger and my children will smile as they cruise the aisles of the everything for a dollar store searching for those delicious snacks imported all the way from the Malay peninsula .
My heart is full now as I watch the little truck going down the street, past the foreclosure signs, to deliver unemployment checks to all my neighbors, too. It is with humble gratitude I bless the little envelope in my fist. I'd light a candle if only I could afford one.
Check Day--Suddenly it isn't funny anymore
This article is intended to inject a little humor into a discussion of a serious issue-unemployment and the economic situation that threatens the survival of our nation. National check day is celebrated by millions of Americans because they are losing faith, losing hope and many have forgotten the value of perseverance, hard work a desire to do better for yourself and your family.
The people aren't lazy or ignorant-just misguided. For decades the powers that influence public opinion have denigrated traditional values of thrift and hard work in favor of a quick buck, easy credit and consumerism. The result is a system that makes the common man believe the deck is stacked against him.
Without assistance from the government or society he has no hope of breaking out of the cycle of quiet despair that has millions of Americans unemployed and on relief, 50 million people relying on food stamps for food. Now there are riots on Wall Street and unrest and despair on Main Street.
National Check Day-There is Hope
Join with your neighbors and friends and make your voice heard. There is opportunity available if you want it. Take responsibility for your life and demand responsible behavior from elected officials at every level of government. Times are going to be hard for a while but if we, the people of this great nation work together and care for each other we can come out of these times a stronger and better people.
